Reclaiming the stories of Love: what is, what isn’t, and what it can be. How do we reshape and retell those old myths that continue to hold us hostage?  It is the story of Psyche, Eros, and Aphrodite and the depths they will go to in the name of love.

Psyche is a naïve, innocent young woman who is kind and compassionate to everyone. Her beauty matches her sweet heart, surpassing everyone in the village and surrounding areas.

She’s ‘too much.’  No one wants her perfection.

When have you been rejected simply for being you?

When have others lashed out?

Punished you?

Shunned you because you weren’t like everyone else?

Psyche was sentenced to death, to become Death’s wife, because she wasn’t ‘loveable in her flawless state.’

Eros was sent to ease the pain of her transition but instead, he wanted Psyche for himself. He didn’t recognize what he was feeling. He was confused and stepped out of his role, which was simply to provide love for everyone else.

He wasn’t allowed to have his own life or emotional flaws–those were for the humans he served. And yet, he couldn’t let Psyche be the bride of Death. He just couldn’t.

When have you been told to ‘stay in your lane?’

Just do what you’re told.

Don’t seek that which isn’t for you.

Your path is already written; don’t try to change it.

When have you felt trapped by love?

Without love or in need of love?

Aphrodite sent Eros on this benevolent mission only to discover her son’s betrayal. He did not do her bidding, and she is left to clean up his mess. Eros and Psyche disappeared; there is no one to prompt sexual awakening and bring about procreation.

Thanatos (Death) is wreaking havoc in the human realm because he was denied his bride. What happens when you’re deprived of a prize you’ve longed for?

Aphrodite hears the cries of both her son, Eros, and his lover, Psyche, but alas, one is a god and the other a mere human. They could never have a life together. Psyche could not bear children to Eros, and Eros would watch her grow old and die.

They both begged Aphrodite to ‘fix’ this.

When have you tried to right a wrong that wasn’t yours to fix?

When have you been thrust into an impossible situation?

When was there was no solution to be had?

Did it anger you to be put into the middle?

Aphrodite’s decision to step in was done in a decidedly unexpected way: Psyche had to prove herself worthy of a god. Eros was caged and helpless—all he could do was watch his beloved and pray she succeeded.

The ultimate sacrifice was made by all three. Nothing would ever be the same again.
